Two years ago my brother and I took a trip to a cousin’s wedding. It was across the country and we’d decided to drive vs. flying. We didn’t exactly know how to get there but we knew the name of the town and the name of the hotel where to check in. We started driving. We had a goal, a destination in mind.

We got in his van and started driving. We didn’t have the entire path laid out. We just started driving in the general direction of where we were headed (Now granted we’d both driven to that part of the country before so starting out wasn’t a huge decision about which way to go).

What we also knew however was that there was a ton of help available to us to get where we were going including written maps, google maps/navigation on smart phones, cell phones to call the hotel and get specific directions, 411 Information to even get the phone number of the hotel, etc.

The exact details of how we got there worked itself out as we headed out on the journey. As went traveled down the highway, we were able to find the best route, and about 14 hours later we reached our destination, had a great time, saw a bunch of family we haven’t seen in years, and then headed home a couple days later. Great Trip, mission accomplished, on to the next goal…

The point here is that with any goal or aspiration (or dream) you don’t necessarily have to know how you are going to get there when you set the goal.

But if you don’t have the goal in the first place you don’t know even know what direction to head, and what questions to ask regarding how to get there (i.e you’ll end up driving around in circles all day). Don’t worry about how you’ll achieve it yet but set that goal and build up a desire to reach it. Suddenly you’ll fine there are a number of resources and help available to get you where you are going but they offer little to no value if you cannot apply them towards a destination.

Set Goals, give yourself deadlines, then ask for help and you’ll be amazed at the progress.

Consultant’s Corner. I wanted to start a blog related to the consulting of consultants that I tend to spend most of my time on these days as the manager of a consulting office for a national Information Technology Consulting Company. I have tons of material and presentations and other items that I figured needs a single place to be stored in order to keep a record of everything and put some coherence behind all the material that I’ve collected/generated over almost 2 decades of consulting with clients in the IT space.

At some point I’ll likely move this to another domain, but I have this domain available and wasn’t doing anything with it, so this is the home for Consultant’s corner.
